Star Trek :
SPACE, THE FINAL FRONTIER...
STAR TREK THE GAME
The finished code is approx 160 KB long, the source codes
cover about 1/2 Megabyte. On the special 512 K version I've
simply left out the unneccesary sounds, but have changed
nothing on the actual game. Obviously it loses a little
atmosphere but the memory didn't allow any other compromise.
If you have more than a MB memory you can copy the data disc
into the RAM so that the speed will be increased.
Star Trek can be steered 100% with the mouse, but it needs to
be supported by a joystick in PORT 2 in order to steer the
spaceships movements.
THE AIM OF THE GAME
There is no definite aim- essentially it is to remain captain
of the Enterprise. In order to achieve this, tasks must be
carried out, the crew must be cared for and generally one
must act sensibly. An irresponsible captain will be unable to
hold his ground just as little as an overcareful one.
THE MENU POINTERS
Mainscreen 1 - the brdge(from commanders chair)
4 indicators are found in the middle.
Top = impulse speed
2nd = warp speed
3rd = energy level recorder
bottom = damage to hull.Next to this on the left is an
indicator for the momentary alarm situation. Under all of
this is the star time indicator.
ENGINEERING
You can adjust the dgree of repairwork with the slide
controls. In order to carry out repairs enough energy must be
available. During big repairs crew members can be injured.
The speed can also be adjusted on the left hand side. NB
impulse speed can only be activated when warp 1 is stopped.
In the middle there are indicators for shield configuration
and for the damage of the ship.
COMMUNICATIONS
The reports that have been announced through the pipe are
given out here NB The reports are not stored in memory.
Therefore it is recommended that important things are checked
up on immediately.
Middle (condition) the alarm comdition of the ship can be
changed.
Top (own messages) this indicates all present announcements
at our disposal which can then be sent with SEND IT.
WEAPONS AND DEFENCE
At this station you can put in the aim settings for the
phasers and photon-torpedos. In the middle (FIRE) the shot
will hit the foreseen target.
In the middle part you can set the shields and activate them
using (ACTIVATE) and deactivate them using (DEACTIVATE).Only
activated screens branch off energy. For each of the four
sides of the ship there is a shield .Activated shields
protect the ship from attacking enemies.
QUIT/SAVE
Here the game can be saved stored or reloaded. After a disc
The game always asks "STGAME" ,therefore it is important not
to change this name.It is also important to always have a
file with the name STARTREK on it (normally the game
itself).Otherwise storing and loading won't work. You can only
ever store/load one game that is filed under the name STGAME
on the STGAME disk.By copying or renaming you can also read
other files which have to carry the name STGAME .In the
middle (CANCEL) is how you come back into the game.
HELMSMAN
Here like in weapons and defence you can set and fire the
weapon system. By (TACTICAL) a small screen will come up on
which you can see the distance and identity of foreign ships.
Besides this,on the bottom left the energy is indicated, the
lines at the bottom put the shields there,at the bottom right
is a red rectangle in case the shields are active. The wide
rectangle adjusts the aim of the photon torpedoes and the
smaller square adjusts that of the phaser. On the left in the
Helmsman's window are the speed controls for the impulse
mechanisms and in the middle is the main steering which you
need for entering into orbit (the edge of the planet) or for
flying into dock.
TURBOLIFT: Here from the bridge you can reach different
sections of the ship.
BRIDGE: Switch over to top view, there you have the same
functions as from the commanders chair.
NAVIGATOR: On the left is the speed control for impulse and
warp drives. Through (CHANGE TARGET) you can put in new
destinations. By moving the mouse over the map screen the
destination will show up automatically, selecting the
destination will lead to automatic course correction. The
position of the Enterprise is shown by a red cross, the
destination by a green cross. Space positions that are to do
with the missions will also be shown in colour,
DESTINATION PLANETS = YELLOW
PLANETS that you have to fetch something from = GREEN
OTHER SPACESHIPS POSITION = BLUE
ENEMY ASSOCIATIONS = RED.
NOTE: flying at warp speed is only worthwhile if a
destination is given.
PAUSE: If selected the game pauses until reselected.
DAMAGE AND REPAIR: On the left hand side you can set the
repairs working. 100% means that afterwards the corresponding
area will be fully at your disposal. Repairs take energy and
eventually the health of the crew suffers. You can read the
degree of damage on the right hand side,as well as the use of
the shields.
SCIENCE AND COMPUTER: Here Mr. Spock has the say giving out
information about the planets, space ships, attackers, and
anything else that can happen. In the middle (SUGGEST), here
you can find out what is best to do now.
STATUS: Here again the important values that the ship has are
indicated; SPEED, COURSE, SHIELDS and DAMAGE.
MAINSCREEN 2: Overall view of the ship. The row of small
gadgets on the left serve to give information about
particular decks.
BRIDGE: Back to mainscreen 1.
OFFICER'S LOUNGE: Here you can be shown the missions that
have to be carried out now. By clicking on (MISSIONS) you
will be given a series until it gets to the beginning. At
(CREW ATTITUDE) you can obtain information concerning the
degrees of your popularity with the crew. You should take
notice as some captains have been fired by there crew.
TRANSPORTER: You reach the transporter room, from here objects
or people can be transported. Energy is needed for this,if
there isn't enough you have to call in for a shuttle. Objects
can be beamed up or down, those available for this are shown
in the respective windows. You can pick out the desired
object by clicking on the arrow. The status tells you if the
transporter is OK and READY indicates whether you can beam or
not (N.B. if you hit another ship you can use it's
transporter even if your's is broken). The deeper the green
of the energy signal the higher it's level.
MEDICAL: With "PILLE" on the right, you can see the condition
of the crew and it's constitution. If the crew is very
decimated the guiding of the ship can be a problem. Dr. McCoy
gives some good advice on the right.
ENGINEERING: See mainscreen 1.
CARGO BAY: To find out what has been stored you can go into
the freight room and use the indicator.
LANDING BAY: With the shuttle picked out in the hangar you
can take objects to or from the planets surface. The gadgets
in the shuttle are far (at any one time) pushing to the
left, right front (above) and for zooming down. The aim is to
fly out of thhe enterprise and make a smooth landing and
return. If you crash, the shuttle will need repairing and
another shuttle used for the next flight.
CREDITS: Here the number and frequency of tasks and incidents
can be established. With (SOUND ON/OFF) you can turn off the
background noise and with (RESET) you can set the game to
beginners level (click twice).
HANGAR: 4shuutles are at your disposal, either in repair (RED)
or in service (GREEN). On each shuttle you can set the
acceleration and gravitation . The further right the controls
are, the more sensitive the handling.
HINTS/TIPS: On entering orbit try to keep the edge of the
planet in the middle of the screen, later a cross-hair and
acircle will come for orientation. Keep the cross-hair
between the edge of the planet and the circle.
On landing on the dock it is enough to see the gates of the
entrance as the dock doesn't move.If you deviate too much the
landing will be broken off. If the transporter is broken and
all the shuttles are in repair you have to either wait or
call in at the dock for repair.
In the dock all repairs are carried out at top speed and the
energy will be brought up to the highest level. This will take
a while if there is much damage.
With enemy attacks try and bluff first as this saves energy
and damage and raises the morale of the crew. The more
experience you gain the harder the tasks from starfleet!
